Product Voice System

Narrative Identity Design • Portfolio Systems

Overview

As Elation’s product lineup grew, messaging started to break down. Voice varied across teams, product identities blurred together, and content often relied on individual interpretation—or generic AI slop.

I built a Product Voice System to bring structure and a unique perspective to product positioning and communication across the portfolio.

The result is clearer, more consistent, and unique messaging, with stronger product differentiation and a faster, more reliable way for teams to create high-quality content.

Problem

As new products were introduced and existing ones evolved, messaging became harder to manage.

  • Inconsistencies across product lines

  • Weak or unclear differentiation

  • Voice is dependent on individual interpretation

Consistency and differentiation were treated as competing goals.

Insight

Consistency doesn’t come from everything sounding the same, but from shared structure. Each product needs a clear narrative identity, not just a shift in tone.

Approach

  • Defined Narrative Territories

    • Gave each product line a clear identity based on its positioning, audience, and use case.

  • Built Language Systems

    • Created repeatable ways to talk about each product, so differentiation came from structure—not just tone.

  • Balanced Unity and Variation

    • Set shared rules across the portfolio while leaving room for each product to feel distinct.

  • Applied Across Touchpoints

    • Rolled the system out across web, campaigns, and supporting content to keep everything aligned.

Outcome

  • Created a scalable narrative identity system across the product portfolio

  • Increased differentiation without losing brand cohesion

  • Made messaging easier to apply across teams and channels

  • Reduced reliance on individual interpretation

Key Takeaway

Strong systems create consistency without removing identity; structure enables differentiation, not sameness.
