Proteus Brutus

Narrative Design

Overview

Proteus Brutus is a flagship product designed to deliver extreme output and scale. The goal was to develop a narrative expression system that could translate that intensity into a clear, structured form, moving beyond feature-driven messaging to create a more distinct and experiential identity.

Problem

Feature-focused messaging limited the product’s ability to stand out.

As a result:

  • The product felt comparable to competitors

  • Language lacked a distinct identity

  • The experience of the product wasn’t clearly conveyed

The product had a strong character, but no defined way to express it.

Insight

Language should translate the experience of using it rather than only describe its features and specs. Narrative is how that experience becomes visible and relatable.

Approach

  • Defined Experiential Direction

    • Established a tonal foundation rooted in intensity, scale, and atmosphere, grounded in how the product feels to use.

  • Defined Brand Language

    • Created repeatable patterns and expressions that consistently translate product attributes into narrative language.

  • Anchored Messaging

    • Ensured all language remained tied to actual performance so expression reinforced credibility rather than abstraction.

  • Applied Across Contexts

    • Scaled the system across web, campaign, and supporting content to maintain consistency in how the product is experienced.

Outcome

  • Created a distinct narrative expression system for the product

  • Increased differentiation in a competitive category

  • Made the product’s experience more tangible through language

  • Enabled consistent expression across touchpoints

Key Takeaway

Language is most effective when it translates experiences.
